A Riesling Retrospective

As part of the upcoming "Wine by the Sea" weekend (www.mendowine.com), the Rendezvous will host a winemakers dinner with Allan Green of Greenwood Ridge Vineyards at 6:30, Friday, June 22.
"A Riesling Retrospective" will be our subject for the evening, and it is likely to be one of the most interesting winemakers dinners we’ve ever done. Allan is an "old pro" at making exceptional Rieslings, and has chosen from his cellar four vintages of his regular Riesling and two of his Late Harvest for us to taste. In developing the menu for the dinner, we were fortunate to be able to taste all the wines and--we have to be honest--we were blown away at how incredible each one was in its own way. Just opening the wines, reading the labels, and tasting the wines made us realize how much there will be for Allan to talk about during the course of the meal, and how fascinating the experience of hearing Allan and tasting his wines will be. Allan will likely cover some very diverse topics, such as appellations (the six wines are variously labeled "Mendocino," "Anderson Valley" and "Mendocino Ridge"), graphic design, bottle closures, sugar, acid and tartrate crystals, baseball and aging (aging wine, that is), food and Riesling pairings, and why Riesling isn’t more popular than it is.
The cost of the dinner will be $90 per person, plus tax and gratuity. While there will be plenty of wine to drink, we should note that pours of some of the wines will be smaller than others because Allan has precious little left of some of the vintages we’ll be tasting. Reservations can be made by phoning the Rendezvous at 800-491-8142 or 707-964-8142, or by e-mailing kim@mcn.org. A credit card number will be required to hold and guarantee the reservation. Seating is limited.
